13.11.2009 • Presentation of Finnish Children Opera at Big Break Festival in Moscow
Project leader Helena Meloni (Seeds of Imagination) and Board of Directors´ Chairwoman (Music Theatre Kapsäkki) Lotta Kuusisto were participating as speakers at Big Break International Festival of Theatre for Children on November 5th in Moscow at a conference called “Theatre for the Early Days”. The other speakers were Roberto Frabetti from Italy, Marina Kornakova from Russia and Anne Nǿjgaard from Denmark. The conference was organized with the support of ASSITEJ Russia, Theatre Union of Russian Federation and the Institute of Finland in Saint-Petersburg. In his introductory Artistic Director Edward Boyakov said that in Russia there are hardly any examples of theatre for children in the age group 3-4 years and under, while in many European countries it is already an existing tradition. Roberto Frabetti´s Teatro Testoni Ragazzi has been working with the youngest spectators already for 20 years in Bologna. The Finnish example is also awakening much interest, and next year´s Big Break Festival will hopefully be focusing on Finnish children theatre.
12.11.2009 • Success of Finnish Music Theatre and Opera
8 Russian specialists from The St. Petersburg State Musical Theatre Zazerkalye, The Buff-Theatre of St. Petersburg, TheMoscow Theatre Ten´ , The Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre were invited by The Finnish Institute in St. Petersburg to see Finnish music theatre and opera both for children and adults during a hectic weekend in Helsinki 30.10.-2.11. The visit was hosted by the Finnish Theatre Information Centre, Music Theatre Kapsäkki and the Finnish National Opera. The guests saw five performances during the weekend and were taken to a thorough excursion at The Finnish National Opera by Ulla Laurio, Head of Education Department. The visit to Helsinki resulted in a Declaration of Intent between Music Theatre Kapsäkki and Buff-Theatre, started negotiations about the staging of a Finnish children opera and caused a lively discussion about the genre of operas for children and how it is understood in Russia and Finland.
11.11.2009 • Two comedies by Finnish-Swedish playwright Bengt Ahlfors premiered in Omsk
Mr. Ahlfors himself arrived to Omsk to see two of his most popular texts lately, The Illusionist and My Elevator Days, being premiered at the State Omsk 5th Theatre. Both performances – My Elevator Days as a stage reading - were greeted with great enthusiasm among the audience. There is a growing interest towards Bengt Ahlfors´s plays in Russia, and there are plans about staging them in Moscow, in the Republic of Mari El and in the Altai krai.
10.11.2009 • Networking and Mobility Training Modules in St. Petersburg and Omsk
One of the most asked-for programs of Seeds of Imagination has been successfully held in St. Petersburg in September and Omsk in November. The professional level of the applicants has been very high at both trainings, and in St. Petersburg The Consultant on Mobility in EU Richard Polácek also held a one-day training for future Russian trainers. Tamara Arapova spoke about the practical aspects of mobility out of her vast experience as the Director of International Programmes at the Golden Mask Festival. The Festival of Young Theatres in Omsk saw a three-day concentration of international seminars organized by Seeds of Imagination: The Networking and Mobility Training was complemented by the first Educational Program in Theatre, Touring and Festival Management, with speakers both from our partners Riksteatern in Sweden and Korjaamo Culture Factory in Helsinki. The President of High Fest International Theatre Festival in Armenia, Artur Ghukasyan was invited as guest speaker. The seminars were lead by International Exchange Coordinator Martina Marti from the Finnish Theatre Information Centre, and the project was invited both to Yekaterinburg and Moscow next spring.
2.6.2009 • New Baltic Drama 2011
New Baltic Drama 2011 is a competition for writers in Finland, Sweden, Russia and Estonia. The subject of the competition is Connecting/separating Baltic Sea. Each of the four winning plays will be produced in one of the countries. The performances will also visit New Baltic Drama 2011 festival in Turku, Finland in November 2011.
The competition will take place simultaneously in four countries/cities. The participants are Finland/Turku, Estonia/Tallinn, Sweden and Russia/St Petersburg. Turku City Theatre is the main producer of the competition.
6.3.2009 • Finnish and Russian playwrights writing a play together about Winter War in 1939
The "Unknown war" - under this heading three Finnish playwrights, Ari-Pekka Lahti, Hanna Kirjavainen and Ulla Raiskio and three Russian playwrights, Michael Durnenkov, Evgeny Kazachkov and Maxim Kurochkin have been writing a play together already for a year. The idea was brought forward by the International Baltic Circle Festival, annually held in Helsinki, which is also going to stage a reading of the final text at their next festival in November 2009. The first meeting of the group was held in June 2008.
